Bronchitis is an inflammation or obstruction in the bronchial tubes leading to the lungs. Acute bronchitis is characterized by coughing, mucus build-up, breathing problems, fever, back pain, chest pain and sore throat. The condition usually comes on suddenly and lasts from two to three weeks. Chronic bronchitis is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of lung diseases that make it difficult for a person to breathe. Older adults are most susceptible to acute bronchitis, but it can affect younger people as well.
Herbal Remedies for Bronchitis
Cigarette smoke is the chief cause of chronic bronchitis, including long-term exposure to second-hand smoke.
Factors that make it worse include air pollution, certain occupations (like coal mining, textile manufacturing, or grain handling), infection, and allergies.
Eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus globules )
Eucalyptus is commonly used in remedies to treat coughs and the common cold. Eucalyptus oil helps loosen phlegm, so many herbal practitioners recommend inhaling eucalyptus vapors to help treat bronchitis, coughs, and the flu.
Peppermint ( Mentha x piperita )
Peppermint and its main active agent, menthol, are effective decongestants. Because menthol thins mucus, it is also a good expectorant, meaning that it helps loosen and breaks up coughs with phlegm. It is soothing and calming for sore throats (pharyngitis) and dry coughs as well.
Slippery elm ( Ulmus fulva )
Slippery elm has received recognition from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective option for sore throat (pharyngitis) and respiratory symptoms including cough.
Diet: If you suffer from bronchitis, you need to be screened for food allergies and sensitivities, and then avoid eating those foods you are allergic or sensitive to. In addition, avoid all sugar and sugar products, starches, soy, corn, wheat and wheat byproducts, soft drinks, commercially processed and/or fried foods, and all foods containing artificial ingredients, such as additives, colorings, flavorings, and preservatives. Also minimize your intake of eggs, milk and dairy products, coffee and other caffeine products. All fruits should be avoided if you have bronchitis, especially bananas as they encourage mucus production.
Plants containing a good source of vitamin C can also help prevent and alleviate the symptoms of bronchitis. It is also recommended that you should eat plants containing magnesium as this can also help in alleviating the symptoms of bronchitis.
These are some of the herbal remedies for bronchitis that you can consider using if you have bronchitis. You can also try boiling oregano leaves and drink the juice.
Aconitum — for early stages of respiratory disorders such as bronchitis; this remedy is most appropriate for people with a hoarse, dry cough who complain of dry mouth, thirst, restlessness, and being awakened by coughing; symptoms tend to worsen in cold air or when when lying on one’s side
Antimonium tartaricum — for wet, rattling cough (although the cough is usually too weak to bring up mucus material from the lungs) that is accompanied by extreme fatigue and difficulty breathing; symptoms usually worsen when the person is lying on his or her back; this remedy is particularly good for children and the elderly and is generally used during the later stages of bronchitis.
