One of the best ways to stop gout is to eat the proper diet. In this article, our main focus will be on how to create a gout free diet to reduce and control the frequency of attacks that occur as they relate to gout.

Before we start talking about a gout free diet, let’s talk about what causes gout first.

Gout happens when crystals form in the muscle joints. These crystals form because of one thing - too much uric acid in the body. Healthy amounts of uric acid are easily filtered out of the body through the kidneys during urination. However, the kidneys can only handle so much uric acid. When there’s too much it has to go somewhere.

Where it goes is directly into your joints. In there it will begin to crystallize and give you much pain and tenderness in that area. Typically, the first joint attacked by gout is in your big toe.

So what’s that have to do with a gout free diet? Well, an excess of uric acid usually occurs because of a diet high in purine. Your body converts purine into uric acid.

If you can create a diet that is as low in purine as possible, while still being healthy, you are on your way to a gout free diet. Additionally, if you can incorporate elements that help better aid the process of getting rid of uric acid in the body then what you have is the perfect gout free diet.

Foods that are high in purine involve red meats, seafood, sardines, anchovies, sweetbreads, liver, and alcoholic beverages. Any food with animal proteins will have higher than normal purine. The idea is replace these foods with foods that are low in purine or have no purine at all. However, it is important that you get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals that are required for a healthy diet.
