One of the reasons that lowering cholesterol with diet is strongly recommended as the first step is because changing the type of foods that you eat is a much less riskier approach than depending on medications to do the job. Adding cholesterol lowering foods to your diet can have a long term beneficial effect and does not pose any risk of negative side effects.
One of the lowering cholesterol foods that has received a great deal of attention is soy protein. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) even approved the claims that soy protein had the ability to lower the risk of heart disease after studying its health effects. In order to again the benefits of soy protein, it is recommended to be consumed at least four times each day with a total intake of about 25 grams for the day and people with high cholesterol who followed such a regime experienced a 15-25% reduction of their cholesterol levels.
Nuts, such as walnuts, pecans and almonds, have also been shown to function as cholesterol lowering foods. Researchers have found through a number of studies over the years that a diet that includes regular servings of nuts results in a double benefit of reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) significantly while at the same time helping to sustain positive levels of the good cholesterol known as HDL.
Oats and barley are two additional foods that are well-known for their abilities to lower cholesterol. Both oats and barley are rich in the soluble fiber called Beta Glucan which is the key element that makes them lowering cholesterol foods. In order to reap the benefits of adding oats and barley to your diet, it is recommended that you eat two to four total cups of these grains each day.
Many fruits and vegetables are also known as cholesterol lowering foods. Some of the best fruits to choose when you are trying to lower cholesterol levels are apples, berries, apricots and all varieties of citrus fruits. Carrots, cabbage and sweet potatoes are some of the vegetables that should be included in your food choices when lowering cholesterol with diet. You should try to work in at least five servings of these fruits and vegetables every day in order to make an impact on your cholesterol levels.
